Chris Kelsey on Jason Crane’s The Jazz Session
It took me literally decades before I was able to listen recordings of myself playing music without cringing. I still can’t listen to recordings of my speaking voice without wanting to reach through the speaker or headphones and retroactively place a gag over my gibbering pie hole. I even try to avoid interviewing people for print, knowing that I’ll have to record and then transcribe our conversation – that’s how much I dislike the sound of my own voice. Don’t even get me started talking about my singing …
That said, the masterful interviewer Jason Crane recorded a conversation we had some weeks ago and has now posted it as a podcast on his The Jazz Session site (it can also be accessed through All About Jazz and iTunes). I’ve yet to listen, though I trust Jason to put me in a presentable light. I wish you guys would listen for me, and warn me away if I sound like a total nimrod.

I listened today while at work and really enjoyed it. The stories about Jay Rosen and the duality of being a musician and critic at the same time were really interesting. I’d vote no on the nimrod designation.

Comment by Richard Kamins — February 19, 2010 @ 2:54 pmThanks, guys. Richard, the CIMPs didn’t come up. You’re right, I should’ve said something. I was kinda nervous, just dealing with the questions as they were asked.
Comment by Chris — February 21, 2010 @ 10:04 amlistened to it on my way to work this morning. It was a very interesting listen. One of the best in recent months. Well done.
The Jazz Session is essential listening. Jason Crane always seems to get the best out of guests. How does he do it?
Comment by Clive R — March 4, 2010 @ 4:23 amHe asks great questions, is extremely knowledgeable, and very professional. He knows his stuff, bottom line. I wish I was half the interviewer he is.
